History

Upintheair Theatre Established 1999

If shows in town were even half as entertaining as the ones that UpintheairTheatre Society put on, we would have no problem replenishing season subscribers lists with younger audience members

On the Boards

Since our inception, in 1999, Upintheair has been an inclusive, supportive organization that offers a creative space where experimental artists can explore, engage, and emerge.

After producing a series of sell-out Fringe hits,  Daniel Martin and David Mott  founded the company in 1999. Soon after, launched the Walking Fish Festival in 2003 as a way of developing links and relationships among emerging theatre artists in Vancouver. Over nine successful years, Walking Fish became a key event in the Vancouver calendar for emerging theatre artists, with over 450 emerging artists participating in the production of over 80 original, Canadian new works. From 2010 – 2012 Upintheair produced Neanderthal Arts in partnership with Left Right Minds. A two week summer festival with original, full length performances, Neanderthal launched the company onto the national stage, bringing an intense period of organizational growth. In 2013 Upintheair refashioned and re-branded our presenting program as the rEvolver Festival, moving to May, refining and sharpening its values and aspirations. rEvolver is now an essential part of the Vancouver and Canadian performing arts ecology, providing a supported environment for emerging and early mid-career professionals to present their boundary-pushing work.

Men of the World. Photo of three people standing on a stage with an orange spotlight shining on them. Two people are standing and the person in the middle in sitting on their knees and is using an old style phone.
The image shows a collection of handmade robots inside a room. The one in the front is riding a horse and wearing a cowboy hat.

Over 20 years as Upintheair shaped its presenting model and festival structure, we continued to independently produce innovative live theatrical performances. With a focus on the speculative fiction genre as a thought-provoking lens through which to explore contemporary political and societal issues, we have produced new works in theatres, parking lots, abandoned warehouses and campervans. Our work is entertaining, meaningful, and questions the world we live in while seeking humour in the darkness.
