Updrafts Commission Call for Design Proposals to Collaborate on a new work of Speculative Fiction
Upintheair Theatre is accepting live performance & design pitch proposals for the Updrafts Collaborative Commission from Canadian emerging or early mid-career designers, generative artists, or companies seeking paid work from an established company in the creation, refinement, and production of a new work of Speculative Fiction by Upintheair Theatre.
The selected artist(s) will collaborate with Upintheair on the development of the work and participate in dramaturgical and creative workshops starting in Fall/Winter 2023. A full production is planned for the fall/early winter of 2024 in Vancouver.
What we are looking for
Upintheair is seeking creative proposals (150 words) from artists that respond to the source material/script excerpt provided, in any the following format(s):
Visions of the future through puppetry based on the source material provided
Discussions or thoughts on how sound can be a central character in the dystopian world of Dead Drone
Initial costuming concepts for any character(s) outlined
Short form video proposals ie: Reels or TIkTok format
A dramaturgical process plan
Other: Do you have another interpretation of our call? Ceremony, installation work, performance art, Site, Interactive Theatre? We are open to any creative impulses you have.
The commission seeks to be responsive to the ideas that emerge through the proposal process.
