Upintheair Theatre is the producer of the rEvolver Festival, The Array performance series, UpDrafts Collaborative Commission and award-winning theatrical productions such as The North Plan, The City and The City and Inside the Seed.

Job Description
Upintheair is hiring a Technical Director to join our team to aid the delivery of the company’s production technical operations. Upintheair has a shared leadership strategy that empowers employees to learn while at work, build their career, and provide a voice in the direction of the organisation. Our Technical Director will hit the ground running for a mainstage production at Russian Hall in March / April 2025.

Title: Festival Technical Director – rEvolver Festival
Venue: The Cultch Historic Theatre, VanCity Culture Lab, Jim Green House Studio, others TBC
Festival Dates: May 21 – June 1, 2025
Hours: 250 hours @ $30 / hour *
Employment Profile: 250 hours contract December 1, 2024 – June 30, 2025 with concentrated hours in Jan – March, & May.
Remuneration: $7,500
*Seasonal Workload Fluctuation
The majority of the position’s responsibilities are responsive to seasonal highs around project delivery for rEvolver Festival in May/June.

Organization Structure: Works in conjunction/collaboration with General Manager, Artistic Director, Technical Director, Marketing Coordinator, and Resident Curators.

Troubleshoot short-listed applications
Feedback on proposed show schedule
Artist technical meetings
Produce technical schedule
Technical planning & preparation
Strike / returns / expenses / post-mortem
Attend production meetings, rehearsals, and technical rehearsals
Attend meetings prepared to work, on time, and with appropriate materials
Generate relevant documents and schedules
Manage the collection of technical forms and information from artists, and liaise with staff to ensure the realisation of the artists technical needs within the limitations of the festival capacity
Ensure the smooth operation of all Technical Rehearsals, performances, recordings, and show strikes
Plan and supervise the load in, strike and general out-fitting of The Jim Green House Studio for festival venue performance
Coordinate and lead festival crew
Be available to trouble-shoot technical issues as they may arise
Work within the production budget
Qualifications:
2 years working in a Technical Director capacity for festival production or equivalent experience
Skills/Competences:
Expertise in Festival technical direction
Strong working knowledge of IATSE collective agreements, crew booking & management
Experience with the following would be an asset:
- Mentoring emerging artists
- The Cultch, Vancouver
Oversee production of technical requirements
Educational generalist, able to maintain a mentoring and collaborative mindset while working with emerging artists
Support the Festival Curator’s vision
Oversee festival production and ensure safe operating practises
Work within the festival budget
Excellent time management and organisational skills
Strong problem solving skills
Proactive and flexible, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team
Strong interpersonal and communication skillsCommunicate needs for support and guidance as they arise
