Upintheair Theatre is the producer of the rEvolver Festival, The Array performance series, UpDrafts Collaborative Commission and award-winning theatrical productions such as The North Plan, The City and The City and Inside the Seed

Job Description

Upintheair is hiring a Technical Director to join our team to aid the delivery of the company’s production technical operations. Upintheair has a shared leadership strategy that empowers employees to learn while at work, build their career, and provide a voice in the direction of the organisation. Our Technical Director will hit the ground running for a mainstage production at Russian Hall in March / April 2025.

Title: Production Technical Director – Dead Drone Mainstage

Venue: The Russian Hall

Show dates: April 9 – 13, 15 – 19, 2025

Hours: 100 hours @ $30 / hour

Employment Profile: 100 hours contract Feb 1st – April 30th with concentrated hours between March 10th – April 9th

Remuneration: $3,000

Organization Structure: Works in conjunction/collaboration with General Manager, Artistic Director, Technical Director, Marketing Coordinator, and Resident Curators.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:
Participate in the planning of mainstage production
Coordinate the load in, strike and general out-fitting of The Russian Hall for performance
Facilitate the design, technical, and logistical aspects of the production, including puppetry, scenery, rigging, props, costumes, lighting, sound, and projection
Create & manage granular production budget
Schedule and lead production meetings

Attend rehearsals, and technical rehearsals as required

Generate relevant documents and schedules 

Support the Director’s / Playwright’s / Designer’s vision

Ensure the smooth operation of all Technical Rehearsals, performances, recordings, and show strikes

Be present and on-site to conduct and supervise installation of all technical and design elements

Assist in hiring and onboard / coordinate and lead crew

Be available to trouble-shoot technical issues as they may arise

Qualifications:
2 years working in a Technical Director capacity for a mainstage production or equivalent experience

Skills/Competences:
Oversee production of technical requirements
Provide technical support for rehearsals
Oversee production and ensure safe operating practises

Work within the production budget

Excellent time management and organisational skills
Strong problem solving skills
Proactive and flexible, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team
Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Communicate needs for support and guidance as they arise
Expertise with lighting, sound, rigging and projection
Strong working knowledge in the operation of digital control boards, sound boards and routing systems

Experience with the following would be an asset:

  • Puppetry
  • Closed-circuit video capture / projection
  • Site-specific production
  • The Russian Hall, Vancouver
