Upintheair Theatre Presents Promethean Theatre and Far From the Tree Productions'

羅密歐與茱麗葉 | Romeo & Juliet

A tale of woe unfolds in 20th Century Chinatown when star crossed love crosses race and riot lines.

Dates: June 1 @ 2:30 pm

In September of 1907, fuelled by the fear of the growing Asian population, White Settlers took to Chinatown in Vancouver BC. Armed with crowbars, baseball bats, they began to smash in the windows of any Asian owned businesses and homes.

This history sets the stage for Canada’s first ever Cantonese/English bilingual production of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, created by Promethean Theatre and Far From the Tree Productions. This well-known tale of woe follows the infamous star-crossed lovers as they navigate the hate surrounding them, a nation divided by fear, and the love that we hope can repair. This reading will focus on the first half of Shakespeare’s work and is a beginning step in developing a groundbreaking and reimagined western classic.
